Cat with Wings

Published September 4, 2008
Of all the mysteries surrounding the feline species of which I am aware, this amazing story sent to me by one of my cat- loving friends, rises far above anything I have encountered during the many years of cat servitude.. While I am flabbergasted with the aeronautic skill evidenced by my cats as they "fly" around the house, chasing each other, leaping into the air, carefully taking aim and deftly landing on lofty perches, I wonder if the Tom Cat described in this recent news item can rival their athletic prowess. According to the "Daily Mail Reporter", dated August 27, a Tom Cat, owned by Ms. Feng, living in China's Sichuan province, has sprouted wing-like growths. These "wings" started as two bumps on his back, and developed into what resembles "wings", during their recent spell of hot weather. Winged Cat with Ms. Feng Owner Feng reported to the "Huashang News” that the bumps, which appeared on her Tom Cat’s back, grew rather quickly. She postulates that this unusual physical manifestation was the result of stress her cat was experiencing by the harassment by many female cats in heat. If this is an accurate assessment, it totally gives new meaning to the "flight" or "fight" reaction for which cats are famous. I have to remember not to show the photographs to our cats. They may get some rather odd ideas. Feng added that her lovable Tom Cat, who is in no way devilish, now resembles a cat angel, consistent with his wonderful disposition. Genetic experts, of course, were quick to claim that this condition was neither magical or that unusual. These "wings" in no way demonstrate that the Tom Cat is angelic. The good news is they also claim that these appendages do not hinder the quality of this cat's life in any way. The condition may be caused by poor grooming, a hereditary skin condition or a genetic defect, and can affect both male and female cats. Based on this remarkable story, I am leaning toward immediately upgrading the well-known expression I often use, with "Oh Cat Feathers!" instead. What are your reactions to these cats with "wings"?
