Cat Survives 2 Euthanasia Attempts

A cat named Andrea has miraculously survived two euthanasia attempts by a Utah animal shelter. NOTE: This is not Andrea.

One lucky cat has seven lives left after surviving two euthanasia attempts from a Utah animal shelter.

According to the Associated Press, a shelter cat named Andrea survived multiple gassings from the West Valley City animal shelter in Utah. The cat had been adopted less than 30 days before when shelter officials made the decision to put Andrea down.

But this cat was resilient; after the decision was made to put Andrea to death by the shelter's gas chamber, the cat came out alive. So they gassed her again, thinking there could be no way she could come out on top.

After the procedure was finished, they found no vital signs, and put the cat on ice, proclaiming her dead. But when they went back to re-examine her body, they found that, remarkably, the cat was still alive!

Finding Andrea to be a true fighter, the shelter finally decided it'd be a good idea to stop trying to kill her. Andrea has since been adopted out, and is currently settling in to her new home.

I volunteer for a shelter and it's absolutely no kill. I didn't even know the existence of shelters that killed animals! Are they mental or what? My country, Italy, is considered barbaric in its treatment of animals, I received so many insults for being Italian. Yet I do tell you it's against the law here to kill an animal, let alone in a so called "shelter". We have about 150 kittens adopted every year. With great care in choosing families, with a lot of love, we give all kittens a name, we feed, nurse and pet them every day.... and no one gets dumped or harmed. Sometimes it takes one year to have a difficult cat adopted. Who cares, he/she will be petted by us for a year. But usually normal cats are adopted in less than 2 months. Each and every one of them!

Where there's a will, there's a way! Those shelters that commit to end the killing have been very successful. Like our rural shelter which has not killed a savable/nonvicious animal in 4 years -- even feral cats are adopted to outdoor homes. It's hard work, sure, but if we can do it, you can do it. God just wasn't ready for her to come home. She was put on this earth for a reason. May be she found it.

gassing is such an awful way to euthenize an animal i am glad this little one had a happy ending but obviously gassing is not the method to use as it doesnt work properly. i feel it is sad that we have to do this at all, if people were responsible and spayed and neutered all there pets maybe we could stop this cruelty happening when will we learn!!!!!

Sad story; happy ending. I am just sick for this poor little animal. Gassing is the cruelest way to put down an animal. So glad she survived and is in a forever home. I only wonder what the gassing will do to her physical condition in the long run? Hopefully, she'll be happy and loved back to her old self in her forever home.

Well I'm on the verge of crying here, so my thoughts are no, there shouldn't be any gas chambers for animals. See how he was then adopted after these two failed attempts...they should just wait.

It reminded me of the cat Thomasina in the Disney movie. After she survived the first time I would never have gassed her the second time. But then I am against gas chambers in the first place. If all animals were able to be spayed & neutered there would be no need for them!
