Cat Litter Box Maintenance: Important for Felines and Your Home

Keep your cat's litter box orderly and maintained to promote healthy living and a clean home.

Keeping your cat's litter box maintained is an essential part of caring for your feline. Cleaning the litter box not only provides a hygienic area for your cat to do his business, but it also by proxy helps keep your house cleanly, as keeping a neat box will help to cut down on house soiling (the most common behavioral problem associated with cat ownership).

Cats can potentially soil the house for a variety of reasons, including underlying medical conditions, stress and, of course, unhappiness with their litter box situation. Whatever the ultimate reason is, house soiling is obviously not desirable, and can signify a problem that some owners don't want to deal with; according to one study, 23 percent of the cats relinquished back to shelters soiled outside the litter box at least once a week.

Recently, our friends at Vetstreet.com tackled the issue of litter box maintenance, putting together a guide to help cat owners navigate this most important issue of feline ownership. They've compiled 10 simple tips for litter box maintenance, ranging from tips on how to clean the box properly to how many trays you should have to what litter is right for your kitty.

I scoop it once a day, use Double Duty litter. If it gets too soiled or smelly, I empty the whole thing and bleach it. I can't use a plastic liner, since my cat will spend all day shredding the plastic. My cat never soiled outside the litter box.
