A major brand of dry cat food has been voluntarily recalled due to potential health risks.

On Saturday, July 30, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that on Friday, July 29, 2011, Nestle Purina PetCare Company (NPPC) issued a voluntary recall on a limited number of 3.5 and 7 pound bags of its Purina ONE Vibrant Maturity 7+ Dry Cat Food due to a potential health risk. The recalled Purina ONE Vibrant Maturity 7+ were made in a single production run and shipped to customers in 12 states in December 2010.

The affected products were voluntarily recalled by Nestle Purina Cat Care Company because some of the bags were found to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The only products included in the recall are Purina ONE Vibrant Maturity 7+ with both the "Best By" date and the production code which can be found at the bottom or back of the bags.

Products affected:

Since no other Purina cat or dog products were contaminated, none were included in this voluntary recall. Consumers who have purchased the recalled items should immediately stop feeding it to their cats and throw it away.

While salmonella can affect animals eating the product, humans handling the contaminated cat food or touching surfaces exposed to the product are also at risk of being infected. Hands and countertops should be thoroughly washed. Pets infected with salmonella may show symptoms of decreased appetite, abdominal pain and fever.  If your pet has consumed the recalled product, contact your veterinarian right away.

Thanks for this! I'm going to have to check what brand I got when I get home, I'm pretty sure I got Purina One but I don't think it was the Maturity 7+ type. I do not make may own cat food, one of my cats will not eat any table food whatsoever, only canned and dry. I've been dieting them for a while on prescription high protein low cal cat food but it got too expensive. So, now I'm just giving them friskies wet with a little dry food each day and I tried to find a brand that didn't use any corn/wheat products in the regular grocery store but that was unsuccessful.

DEFINITELY scarey. As far as making my own cat food, I can't even get them to eat canned food or raw or cooked ground turkey. They have no interest in any table food at all...so I doubt I'd have much luck in the kitchen preparing their food.

Wow, good info. I was anxious to see what brand was rec alled. Luckily, I do not buy that brand of food for our cat. Thanks so much for the info.
