A "Cat"-chy Fur Collar

Hush Puppy, our fur collar which happens to purr!
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Florida's (aka The Sunshine State) claim to fame is certainly not for its cold weather. And while I hear tell from the local yokels in the neighborhood of our Central Florida home that the chilly weather is excellent for speeding up the ripening of our oranges, lemons and grapefruits growing in our back yard, when the mercury drops down into the low 40s or even below our house can become uncomfortably drafty.
So on these occasions, I am more than eager to don my magnificent soft fur collar (which by the way is not fashioned out of faux fur), wrapping it around my neck to chase away the chill. I can’t think of anything more soothing and relaxing to stop my teeth from chattering. One of the things I most love about my fur collar is its beautifully warm ivory and brown color which blends in with our interior décor. I must tell you--without a doubt it is one of the best gifts I ever gave myself in the late fall of 2000.
But the best thing about this collar is its internally built-in massage device (provided at no additional charge), which vibrates against my aching neck almost on command. Its battery is self charging so I don’t even have to mess with it at all. After I have been sitting at my computer working for hours on end, there is nothing I can think of that is more soothing and relaxing.
I have to admit I frequently wear my collar while dining with my husband or close friends while we are at home. I wouldn’t dare wear this collar outside the house, for fear someone might want to steal it. It is far too precious to me, and of course, it can never be replaced.
However, there is one serious downside to this incredible fur collar. There are a few occasions when its heat gets overwhelming to me so I decide it’s time to take it off. This collar does not in any way relish its removal, and in fact can become quite testy. You see, this fur collar comes with 18 sharp little claws, which it uses to express its displeasure by instantly digging into my shoulders; yet it never stops loudly vibrating.
You guessed it! The fur collar that gives me so much pleasure is Dr. Hush Puppy, one of our beloved Oriental Shorthairs. His favorite spot at dinner time is perched around my neck and shoulders. But his highly appreciated warmth doesn’t come without a price. His swift front paw can grab a piece of steak off my fork in a New York minute. Yet in spite of those moments of discomfort from time to time, I wouldn’t trade this fur collar in for anything in the world. In fact, I feel honored by his presence.

Yes!! Clyde, one of the hospital cats at the vet where I work is a fur collar. He will perch on someone's shoulders and neck purring and making happy feet for hours. It's wonderful after a stressful day! :)
While none of my beloveds does this, my aunt recently told me that my dad had a "fur collar" named Mickey who used to ride around his neck while my dad shaved. That was a treasured picture for me to have.
My Shadow girl loves to sleep next to my pillow or...on the second pillow so I will start to roll over and run into..... a furry ball! She will eventually move if I become insistent.... but when I'm half asleep I usually just roll back to where I was....she knows who's in charge!
I do have sort of a fur collar, except it wraps around my back. My Shih Tzu has to be close to me at all times. When I sit in my computer chair, I pick him up and he goes around back and sits. It is like having a little heating pad. He is very spoiled.
I don't have a fur collar but I do have a beautiful fur back pad and soft purring blanket when my back is sore. Same kind as you have too. :) He even curls under the covers on my back.
Oh you are so lucky Jo, what a wonderful fur collar. In 37 years of cats we've never had one who would drape around us like that lol
The nearest we had was our Bert when he was a kitten, he loved to sit on shoulders.
This story hit home for me. I've never had a cat before that liked to sit on my neck and back, but the new black stray kitten I rescued recently (Magic) is definitely a fur collar!
Now that winter is arriving in the Tahoe-Reno region, he will come in quite handy for that. However, I do have to draw the line at him leaping on my legs and climbing me like a tree before getting to my neck! That was painful and shocking! He's going to have to wait until I'm reading in bed to snuggle around my neck on my pillow.
I'm trying to give Magic guidance and time in adjusting to his new life in an indoor home vs. the wild outdoors. I bought a harness and leash for him so I can take him outside for some fresh air and to scratch the trees which he's adjusted to gradually. I also decided to see if he would let me "walk" him when I walk the dogs. It took him some time to reluctantly accept it, but after 20 minutes, he began to enjoy it and walked along our neighborhood road right in line with my two dogs. The neighbors sure smiled as they drove by us! Animals really can learn almost anything if you give them the chance with patience and encouraging praise.
