French Bulldogs are on the rise, and for good reason. Every dog has his day, and in my neighborhood it seems to be the day of the French Bulldog. Sure, we have our fair share of Labs and Goldens walking in the door at Life on the Leash, but Frenchies are quickly bringing up the rear. The AKC says that they're #21 on the list of most popular breeds, however my view from behind the counter tells a different story.

Should we credit Martha Stewart and her Frenchies for the rise in the breed's popularity? Or have people figured out that French Bulldogs are more than a pretty face? Frenchies are silly, affectionate, and the ones I've trained have been super clever.

Are you a French Bulldog worshiper? Or are you thinking about getting one? (If so, don't forget about the great breed-specific rescue organizations out there!) Share your Frenchie insights, advice and concerns in the comments!

There is no other dog like a French Bulldog. They have so much character and are absolutely adorable. Everywhere they go they attract attention and those who own them are the lucky ones. Good French Bulldog owners understand that these dogs require an environment that is appropriate for their breed and health specific needs. I LOVE MINE and will never own another breed.

I think everyone here would agree with me when I say that once you've had a frenchie, it's hard to imagine life without this adorable dog. One thing that concerns me about their rise in popualarity is that many people do not undertand that these dogs are expensive to own and require many vet visits and the highest quality food because they are prone to skin allergies. Not to mention all those puppy mills that are breeding this dog to death because of their rise in popularity which causes bad breeding and makes the breed inherit even more genitic diseases that is pretty common with these breeds. So people, if you have never had a frenchie, please do some research first to see if this is the right dog for you. It would just be a shame to see so many of these incredible dogs being surrendered because the person made a rash decison based on popularity or cuteness. But if you do decide that this is the right breed for you, please get them from reputable breeders or rescues, and don't support those awful puppy mills that are destroying this wonderful breed.

We LOVE our Frenchie girl! She is definitely the clown of our family! Yeah....she farts, she snores, she huffs when she doesn't get her way, and insists a mixture of wet and dry food for every meal, but that's the JOY of owning a Frenchie!

I'd like another Frenchie. Have been a Frenchie fanatic for 5 or 6yrs now and have a 18month old one right now. They're a compact bundle of joy, what more could one want? Perfect for anyone in every way.

And by perfect I mean someone who is NOT looking for a Lab type dog. They are NOT in any way a "Dog's dog" They are playful but their nails are like thick blunt knives. They're the hipster of dogs I would say. Esoteric for good reason. Self righteous too.
