Can Cats and Dogs Really Become Best Friends?

Published December 22, 2009

I am constantly amazed when people approach me to say that cats and dogs are "enemies", and cannot ever be friends. It makes me wonder where in the world they got that information.

These dangerous and ignorant rumors seem to persist, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. I call it "dangerous", as it may prevent people who may want to adopt a dog or cat but are afraid that their resident pet may inflict serious injury on the newcomer to the household, when this is far from the truth!

With "proper" and patient introductions, dogs and cats can get along extremely well, and in fact can become best buddies. Years ago, I had the pleasure of watching my friend's huge black Great Dane interacting with Snowball, their little white cat.

At first I was a little concerned about how Snowball would react to the Dane's display of affection, but after a short time I was relieved to find that she absolutely adored being carried around the house by her canine companion, tenderly held by her head!

If I had just heard about this unusual method of transportation I would have been quite upset, but the cat thoroughly enjoyed the very careful and gentle attention. In fact, she would approach the oversized dog requesting to be carried to another part of the house!

So when I recently ran across this wonderful little video I was delighted to be able to share this very sweet and touching video that so vividly depicts the loving relationship that the "Tuxedo" black and white cat shares with a very loving Golden Retriever. rebass10, the pawrent of these two adorable pets, described their video, uploaded to YouTube, which has received tremendous exposure and popularity, by commenting, "Our Golden Retriever & Tuxedo Cat are best buddies. Here's examples of how they keep each other company".

Enjoy also the fabulous music performed by Jeremy Bass, whose music can be found at http://www.myspace.com/jeremybassmusic

I think that this video is very appropriate for this time of year to grace the upcoming Holiday Season, with its message of peace, love and acceptance. So take a few minutes to experience Stanley and Gabrielle's delightful companionship.

A very entertaining video. I loved watching it! I also have a dog that loves cats. Her name is Molly and she spends hours playing with my daughters cat Huego. They wrestle, play tag and play hide and seek.

Our 3 dogs all get along with our 5 cats. In fact, Esther (black DSH) and Magic (Collie) are great friends. Esther is constantly making "happy feet" on Magic's thick coat and then she curls up next to his belly or under his tail and sleeps with him. Holly, our Pit Bull and Mischief our Persian mix also have a playful relationship similar to that of Gabrielle and Stanley. It's great to watch....especially for those that think Pit Bulls kill cats. Not all are bad......but that's another soap box. LOL

Oh yes, our dog loved our cats. She was long suffering as the kittens grew up and she was teased and tussled. They played beautifully together. Our dogs were farm dogs so they learned as puppies about being "nice" to the farm stock. On the other hand, they would kill a predator in a heartbeat. They knew the difference and were good protectors.

I have living proof that dogs & cats can get along. I have 3 dogs and 7 cats in my home. Yes I have a large house which has two stories but where ever there is a dog you can be sure there are cats vying for attention from them. My daughter also owns cats and dogs and when she takes my dogs to her place to bath them her cats so no fear of strange dogs in their house. I think they can sense a dangerous situation but they know they are safe with my dogs in their house.

That' so sweet. We had a dog when I was a kid that was such good friends with the cat that she would leave her kittens for him to babysit while she went out for some "me" time. The kittens snuggle up on his belly while he was lying in his basket, purring their heads off.
