California's license plates are helping to raise awareness about the benefits of neutering and spaying your pets.
Once again, the great state of California is at the forefront when it comes to finding innovative methods of promoting animal welfare. I have to give them kudos for this dandy idea which definitely has them sitting in the driver’s seat!
What’s most exciting is that pet loving people lucky enough to be living in the Golden State have just been given a fabulous opportunity to be able to help spread the word about neutering and spaying pets, which will be sure to educate folks about how essential neutering and spaying are. These procedures contribute greatly in reducing feline and canine overpopulation, and help reduce the countless number of unwanted kittens and puppies.
Sponsored by the California Veterinary Medical Board, California has helped to increase neuter and spay awareness by creating California Spay and Neuter license plates. These attractive license plates are sure to attract attention. And to sweeten the pot, proceeds from the plates provides funding for free or low-cost spay and neuter surgeries throughout California.
The nominal fee for a sequentially numbered plate is only $50. The cost of a personalized plate, whether a new request or a transfer from an existing personalized plate, is $98. While these fees are higher than the normal registration fee, this writer thinks that these special plates will go a long way in raising public awareness about such an important issue.
The artwork for the California Spay and Neuter license plates was created and donated by Pierce Brosnan, an artist, animal lover, and international actor. The dog and cat featured on the plate are Shilo (the dog) and Coco (the cat), who were both adopted by Brosnan and his wife Keely.
California's animal shelters are filled to the brim with animals needing forever loving homes. Sadly, hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs are annually euthanized just because there aren't enough homes in which they can be placed. By just neutering and spaying their pets, pet owners can help stem the tide of destruction of these innocent cats, dogs, kittens and puppies. It truly is a no-brainer.
The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the California Spay and Neuter License Plate Fund, will manage and administer the program.

I sure hope the rest of the country will follow in the paw prints of this creative and fun way to get the word out, don’t you? Share your opinion in a comment.

What a lovely way to support your love of animals!
Anonymous (below me), I understand that you do not want to disrespect animals, but spay and neutering helps reduce the rates of euthanasia in shelters drastically. By neutering a small amount of dogs you can prevent the death of thousands. Beyond the killing aspect, it saves shelters a tremendous amount of money.
Also, spaying or neutering your pet reduces the risk of certain types of cancer (mammary cancer is a relatively common disease in unspayed females) that can be terminal for your pet, not to mention EXPENSIVE to treat. Spaying or neutering your pet can also eliminate undesirable behaviors like spraying and fighting. (http://www.foundanimals.org/pet-spay-neuter/spay-neuter-benefits)
I would rather put my pet down than neuter him. It is wrong for people to mutilate animals just so that they're a little more people-friendly. Procreation and carrying capacities are a natural parts of life. It is definitely more respectful to kill an animal than it is to remove his or her genetalia.
NJ has a similar plate. It it an "animal friendly" plate. Cost is $50 for standard plate, $100 for purrsonalized plate initially, then $10 added to normal registration fee each year. That money then goes into the fund for the state spay/neuter program. And Vicki is right.....ALL states should do this. :)
Wonderful concept and wonderful new way to get the message out, thanks to Mr. Brosnan and everyone involved. Little by little, day by day, year by year, we are making progress toward the time when EVERY cat and kitten will have that loving, FOREVER home (s)he so richly deserves.
What a great way to promote spaying and neutering awareness. I wish all states would do this. There are way too many animals ending up in shelters and clinics with no homes. More people need to be aware of how important this practice is.
