Blizzard Concerns from a Cat's Perspective
Published January 10, 2011
My husband Marty has recently been developing a very special relationship with Hubble, our highly intelligent and sensitive white Oriental Shorthair cat.
While Hubble is both an affectionate and charming feline, he has, over the years tended to be a "mama's boy," constantly following me around the house, sharing his thoughts with his rather unique "chirps" and "chortles." And when he becomes ecstatically happy, his tail bushes up, resembling a baby bottle brush.
But let me to get to the heart of the matter! The other morning as I was just awakening, my eyelids barely open, Marty turned to me and softly whispered in my ear, "Our Hubble is going through a major crisis, and for the past few weeks has been 'talking' to me about them. He is extremely worried about Global Warming!" You can only imagine how astonished I was upon hearing that our sweet, gentle little kitty, who generally is without a care in the world, is now in crisis mode.
Almost in a trance-like state, Marty continued sharing with me that Hubble has become extremely worried with the bitterly cold weather, with horrendous blizzards recently blanketing many parts of the county.
Additionally, with the unusual weather and climate patterns that developed during the Fall, causing record-breaking snowfall in Siberia, with frigid temperatures and howling winds blowing over the Himalayas, he has become overly troubled about how all these weather conditions will affect his relatives living in Egypt, Turkey and Africa. Hubble also confided in Marty that his feline ancestors have been haunting him with thoughts about how cats throughout the world will survive, especially the white cats that will no longer be visible against the backdrop of the fallen snow.
Marty tried in vain to comfort Hubble, even trying to enlist assistance from Hush Puppy, our Lilac Point Oriental. But being a fully enlightened bodhisattva, not attached to world events, simply fell into a deep state of meditation, purring away to his heart's content. Of course there is no solution to our problem. All we can do is hope and pray that somehow Hush Puppy's state of well-beingness rubs off on our little worried white warrior.
Meanwhile, even though Hubble feels slightly guilty about doing it, he seeks comfort by spending time snuggling up, digging a nest in the pile of warm blankets on our bed.
Do your cats ever confide in you? Tell us all about it in a comment.

Gary and I have been together for 7 long winters and he's hated every one of them. We're expecting a blizzard here in the midwest and I can already hear his meows of concern! He's a beautiful powdery white color that could easily get lost in the snow. In fact his first winter he accidentally got outside and all I can say is thank goodness for his pink little nose. It was so sad, almost as though his eyes was saying, "help me right meow..."
Yes, Jo, my two boys, Nick and Mr. Big, are quite edgy about all the white stuff out on the lawn...3" since Sunday night. They keep watching to see if it's creeping closer to the house. One thing they do like about it is that it makes it much easier to see the birds at the feeders and on the ground. My girl, Gracie, can't be bothered about that stuff...she knows she's safe with her momma :-)
We are having a particularly bad winter with lots of deep snow here in N E England and our 2 boyz don't like it at all. They don't need words to tell us what they think of us allowing it to go on, they expect us to put it right for them like we do other things. Oh if only we could ...... They've both developed pogo stick jumps to get across the garden lol
The best is when your cat finally decides to go out in the snow and walks along shaking each paw after standing on it!
I'm more worried about Marty than Hubble, Jo. Hubble will work it out - cats usually do - but Marty may need some help.
The first pet I had as an adult was a rescue cate nemed Corky. She liked to be fed at the same time every day (even weekends). She learned to actually cry right into my ear on weekends or summers when I did not go to work so I would be awake by 6:30 am to get her her breakfast!
Oh dear yes!! We are in crisis mode here too. RUles of the house are that it HAS to be at least 32 degrees for the kitty enclosure to be opened. It is hovering in the 20s now for many days. The cats are going island happy from being locked out of their play area. Lots of dialog going on about that right now.
