Petside's exclusive look at the beginnings of an animal shelter makeover!
Animal adoption is a cause that Petside is extremely proud to champion. But while the pets come first, the animal shelter taking care of them is often overlooked: The outside aesthetic, and the inside look and feel of an animal shelter can sometimes be the deciding factor in a potential owner's choice to adopt, or even to walk in in the first place.
Our friends at Iams, Eukanuba and Natura had similar thoughts!
With their Paws for a Cause program, 180 volunteers made over a local shelter, and we came along to exclusively document the whole thing. Check out our exclusive video below to see the beginnings of a shelter makeover, and become inspired by the difference you can make in your own community!
Thinking a shelter makeover in your local area sounds far-fetched? It's not as hard as it might seem.
We spoke to Bev Van Zant, Community Manager with Iams, Eukanuba and Natura, about steps you can take to get started.
“The people you need to lead this project include: A project manager to coordinate teams; a project foreman to advise on all aspects of the makeover; and a logistics and supplies leader to line up communication, supplies and things like food and port-a-potties,” says Van Zant.
With your leadership and supplies in place, you’re almost ready to get to work on remaking your local shelter!
In choosing an animal shelter to renovate, Van Zant suggests you consider some of the following:
- Does your shelter actually need help?
- Can the shelter you’re helping put your renovations to good use?
- Is the amount of work the shelter needs able to be completed with the workers you have?
If you can answer “Yes” to all of these questions when talking about the potential shelter makeover candidate, then this shelter is probably deserving of the makeover you’re about to give it!
Wondering what changes the shelter underwent? Check out Petside's exclusive documentation of the transformations that this shelter went through in Animal Shelter Makeover: Part II!

I just adopted a darling 1 to 2 year old cat, an orange tabby, after losing my beautiful doll-faced Persian last month. I brought a couple items on the Providence Animal Rescue League wish list, and adopted a Home for the Holidays cat. She's adorable! She's had all her tests and shots, including her Rabies tag, and a free vet visit, all for $45. It's going to be a happy Christmas after all!!
