Age-Appropriate Puppy Exercise

Thinking about going on an active outing with your pup? Puppy exercise is important, but you have to consider the age of your pooch when taking him/her out for an activity.

Puppy exercise should be limited to soft surfaces like grass, dirt or even the carpet of your home. At a young age, a puppy's tissues are still soft and his/her bones are growing. A great deal of exercise can be stressful on your young pup's growing body.

You might also find a young puppy has a shorter attention span and will be more prone to distractions. Until your puppy is four months of age, limit puppy exercise to play and hold off on walking him/her on a leash for exercise.

I agree to just play in the backyard in 15 minute or less spurts. The vet said under a mile a day, but I was walking my puppy on leash 4 times a day about 30 feet each time. Now, my puppy will not go past the front yard....not even to the 30 feet to the first stop sign. He loves to sleep after running after the soccer ball. Sometimes he will let a carrot or tennis ball spin around and he will chase it and paw at it. That wears him out. He totally needs his rest.

I think my White Swiss Shepherd puppy made this clear to me as well. We just got her 3 days ago. She was so active and still full of energy when I took her out potty the first night that I went for a 15 minute walk around the neighborhood. Now she won't go out of sight from the house. Her favorite place is the backyard or the field next to the house.
