A man has spent $60,000 of his own savings in a high profile dog custody battle.

How much money would you spend to keep your dog? How about $60,000 of your own savings?

That's exactly what one man, Craig Dershowitz, is doing. After separating from a woman he was dating for four years, Dershowitz has found himself locked in a now high profile custody battle over what he claims is his dog, Knuckles. So far, Dershowitz has burned through $60,000 in an effort to get the dog back after his ex-girlfriend took Knuckles with her when she moved to California.

In the midst of the breakup, Dershowitz claims that his ex kidnapped knuckles and took him to California. The truth, however, probably lies somewhere in between, as the couple shared custody of Knuckles for close to four years.

Dershowitz has known no bounds to his efforts to get his dog back; recently, he even appeared on TODAY to make his case, and deny that he's pursuing Knuckles' custody out of revenge. As he diligently points out, that'd be a pretty expensive revenge.

No matter the outcome, though, Dershowitz's high profile custody battle brings a couple of issues to light. First, the issue crops up of what exactly one would do to keep their dog, especially when financial figures enter the mix.

Does Vet Care Put a Price on Our Pet's Love?

The issue begs the question: Is there really a price on the love we have for our pets? At what point, if any, do we decide that something is too expensive to pursue our pet's wellbeing? They are, after all, members of our family.

Secondly, the Dershowitz case also begs the question: what happens to pets after divorces or break-ups in which custody of a pet was shared? When pets are entered into the relationship mix, things can become very dicey once that relationship comes to an end.

While some will believe that Dershowitz is using media just to garner attention to the case, others will believe that he is truly fighting, as evidenced by burning through $60,000 of his own savings, for his pet to come home.

What do you think? Does Dershowitz have a leg to stand on? Are there certain things that put a monetary figure on the love we have for our pets? Share your thoughts in a comment.

YES--he should be alowed to keep HIS PET. The woman just wants to keep it to get even with the man. She is in another place-a new life-and should get a new pet !

If Mr.Dershowitz bought the dog and has the papers to prove it, then the custody for the dog should go to him. If he pays for all the medical expenses and care he owns the dog.

I was involved in a similar situation. I had lost my apt. due to a financial situation and needed a place for my 2 dogs, a cocker spaniel(Princess) and a dalmatian (Pokey-dot) I asked an acquaintance to foster both dogs and she agreed. When she arrived she had changed her mind and said she would only take my dalmatian...the deal was that she would foster him until I was able to take him back once my financial situation had improved....I knew things were going to hell when I contacted her the first week to get her address so that I could come visit my dog...she refused to give me her address or allow me to visit my own dog!Within 8 weeks I had recoved financially, got a new home and contacted her to get my dog back...she again refused! I finally had to file with the courts to get him back and she counter filed, stating that I had `abused` this dog six months earlier.....! I was stunned...these dogs were my life, my family and this nut was only doing this so she could keep my dog! This is a 50+ year old woman who had put her husband thru veternary school but when questioned as to whether she called animal control or police when the `abuse` occured six months earlier, she said she didn`t know you could do that.....??? WHAT???? Her story fell apart and I eventually won, but tit took 18 months to have my dog returned and when he was, he was in terrible physical condition! The courts treat dogs as `property` but do not lend any value to emotional attachment or love or connection to the animal...I had supervised visits with my own dog, after it had been revealed this woman lied to animal control about a prior pet, stating the dog had died to avoid paying a $10 license fee!! I went thru $11k in my attempt to get my dog back, heartaches, depression etc etc all because of this nutjob who wanted a dalmatian!

Who bought the dog ? Was the dog purchased for the girlfriend ? Did Mr. D purchase the dog during the course of his relationship and then she joined in sharing ? Did she kidnap the dog for revenge ? Why not go to California and take it back ? Cheaper than the courts.
